Hardy Heron - 8.04

Ubuntus latest Beta Operating System is out now, Hardy Heron has arrived. My own early experience with it is looking very good.
Hardy Heron 8.04 Ubuntu snappy clean Beta

Ubuntus latest - the best so far?
Headings
  1. Hardy Heron has arrived.
  2. Firefox
  3. ThunderBird - Evolution
  4. FileZilla - Native .deb
  5. Torrents - Wine - uTorrent
  6. Transmission - MythTV - Media Box
  7. DVD - Video - Audio - Exaile
  8. Devede - Sound Converter - EasyTag
Ok well who knows, only time will tell, honestly I never really liked Gutsy Gibbon, mainly because it seemed like a backward step from Feisty Fawn. Mostly every Ubuntu release has been much better than the one it replaced. This wasn't the case when gutsy was released, although there was some documented problems it was also just the "vibe" of gutsy, although it ran well enough and did everything I wanted it to, it just wasn't as good as Feisty Fawn.

Hardy Heron has arrived.

Well the Beta release is available for download anyway, I download the torrent file and then believe it or not I loaded the torrent into Transmission BT client. I actually have it running on my Media Box which still runs Gutsy Gibbon, it does all my media needs wonderfully through MythTV. I wont upgrade it to Hardy Heron just yet I will wait till it's final release. Just getting more cautios in my old age lol.

Hardy installed flawlessly, do I don't have much to say about that aspect. Things are a little different to Gutsy, but mostly pretty much the same.

I have spent most of the time configuring the way I want it to be. I must say I love the new Firefox that comes with it, Firefox - 3.0b4, it's very polished and loads damn fast. In fact HH seems to be very snappy indeed. Is it because it's a new install, and don't have much loaded on it yet? I really hope not, although I don't find Ubuntu to get bogged down like Micro$oft operating systems do. I haven't used Vista at all and probably never will, it seems though that while ubuntu is getting faster from all reports MS Vista is bloatware at it's finest.

Firefox

Oh one of the problems is that Firefox being Beta doesn't have many extensions and add ons yet but that's just a matter of time before all the favourites start appearing again, well hopefully ;o)

ThunderBird - Evolution

I have also installed ThunderBird instead of using Evolution, nothing against Evo, just like Thunderbird. I maily use Gmail now days anyway so an email client is not as important as it once was, although I do run one email addy through Thunderbird.

FileZilla - Native .deb

I like the repository version of Linux Filezilla just as much as I liked the winbloze version, it's very plain and clean interface make it a pleasure to use on Hardy.

Torrents - Wine - uTorrent

Oh although I didn't really want to install Wine on Hardy, there is somethings that we just don't have a native Linux version of, uTorrent being one of them. Yes I know about the very simple and good client Transmission but unfortunately being a window$ world, some of the people who run torrent sites just can't see past the Bill Gate$ way of doing things, ya have to laugh really, cos I mean generally their torrent tracker sites run on Linux and PHP lol.

Transmission - MythTV - Media Box

So anyway for most of the private torrent sites they will accept the latest version of Transmission 1.06 I think it is so even though it's a pain I run Transmission on my Media Box and uTorrent on my Desktop box, eh such is life!

DVD - Video - Audio - Exaile

I have of course installed VLC, the finest media player, I like XINE for DVD's as well, although haven't installed as of yet. I want to wait till Hardy Heron's final release before I go crazy installing anything more than I really need. I use Exaile (Amarok clone) to play MP3s well they were MP3s before I convert them to an OGG lol.

Devede - Sound Converter - EasyTag

Excellent Devede is available to convert my home videos avis to DVD, I love this program, have tried others but they just don't float my boat. I Have also been converting those nasty MP3s to OGG with a nifty program called Sound Converter, very quick and does an excellent job.
I kinda can't wait till I install Hardy Heron onto the Media box cos it has the latest version of MythTV, it's looking very nice.I have also learnt about EasyTag great lttle program for editing those pesky ID3 tags on digital music files. It seems quite good, it has done what I ask of it, mainly repairing other people tagging stuff ups lol.

Anyway, I will add more as I configure and test more.
