Hey Ubuntu forum!

For some reason Compiz continues to crash... but I don't know why or how it happens. I'm still pretty new with Ubuntu, so hand-holding would be appreciated.

I am new to ubuntu. I installed it last week. Took 3 tries to install but it finally installed after I installed another 256MB RAM (now I have 512). Ok, so now the install goes smoothly and I am asked to remove the CD and reboot. I do but I never get to the desktop. I get an orange backgrounded screen that then goes black and and linux version of an hourglass (I guess, its a circle that has dots on it ?) Sometimes I don't get that far the screen just goes dark after selecting generic ubuntu version. I have tried to go to recovery mode, I can get there fine and run all the different options, doesn't help me boot up. I ran a memory test (its another option I have at startup) Everything is fine.



Is this supposed to be this complicated ? I realise its a free OS but if it doesn't work then its useless to me. lol

Its just a normal keyboard.Is there some program that allows you to make

I noticed that the eeepc version of Ubuntu includes some settings intended to improve the lifetime of the SSD drive [1]:



"Flash drives are faster than regular hard drives, but their life time is reduced by the number of times it's written to. Ubuntu likes writing to the hard drive all the time: temporary files and just a little write here and there in between, to keep the drive alive. This behavior is not wanted by SSD owners though."



Does anyone know why the Dell Ubuntu doesn't make use of these SSD-optimized settings?

Has anyone got Opera intalled on Ibex 64? I tried to install with --force-architecture and it looked like it installed ok.

I have intalled:

libqt3-mt

motif-clients

libmotif3



However, after the install opera will not run at all, and i dont get any errors... i even tried to run it from shell but i get this:



exec: 307: /usr/lib/opera/9.62/opera: not found

I did a new ubuntu 8.10 install on a IBM Vista, /dev/sda3, with an existing Mint partition (mint is on /dev/sda1). As is customary for a new install, I did an update. Since Ubuntu updates take some time to complete, i decided to lock the screen so no one comes by to "screw-around" with it. When i returned, the screen could not be unlocked. My only alternative was to do a hard reset. i suspect that the filesystem was consequently damaged beyond repair.



When i tried reinstalling the system, it hung at the part where they asked for what is your keyboard localization. i suspect the system detected /dev/sda3 & was trying 2 recover it.



To resolve the problem, i ended up booting from the mint partition & deleting /dev/sda3. My question is, why didn't the unlock screen appear as stated in the documentation?

Running Hardy. Can mount a FreeBSD drive with the command:



mount -t ufs -r -o ufstype=ufs2 /dev/sdb1 /media/ufsdisk1



Can see and access all my files but do not have read/write ability. Also, can not figure out the correct command to put in fstab to permanently mount the drive. Any help would be appreciated. Thank you.

I really want to get the wireless net connection working on this laptop, a Sony Vaio VGN-S3HP, and I want some advice on how to approach it.



Have seen many things on the net, and am afraid most of it is way beyond me.



Also some very basic language needed:



I understand that I need to see which card I have.

That's "ethernet" is it? Or is that the "controller"?



I know the wireless works on it, because on Windows XP it just used to pick it up.



Any tips, or pointer to a good "How-To" for someone as dense as myself would be very much appreciated! ;)



I installed Hardy on this machine and it's working very well.

Last week I asked for help and eventually found out how to get wireless working on Ubuntu 8.10



Yesterday I was watching videos and noticed them blink, so I think I found some kind of work-around that let me watch videos without turning off the visual effects. The workaround was the one posted by Mardoct909 in this thread:

I downloaded envy and installed the drivers and videos worked. Then I continued to use my wireless for a few more hours until I decided to turn it off eventually. I went into Windows to solve a problem I had with strange defragmenting problems on my Windows partition, and I solved those by going into Command Prompt and deleting my shadowcopy.



This morning, the only time I had used my computer was to run Windows Vista to install drivers on my Windows Mobile cell phone (I'm only mentioning this because I'm not exactly sure if it has any connection to Ubuntu's wireless failing). I had to install Windows Mobile because I got this laptop recently, and the disk it came with didn't work, so I downloaded the drivers straight from the Internet, which actually worked.



Then I logged off Windows and went to do other things.



Here's where the problem begins. When I got back to my laptop, I went straight into Ubuntu and logged in as I normally do. I tried to connect to the Internet, but only the bottom circle was green. The connection attempt failed. I thought I might have gotten bad luck or something, so I rebooted. I went back into the wireless network list, and instead of seeing any routers there, nothing shows up! I went to reset my router and tried to connect again. No luck. I rebooted a third time and had no luck.



When this kind of situation occurs, I usually resort to using my Edimax USB wireless adapter. But to my surprise, IT DIDN'T WORK EITHER! My Edimax adapter was usually my failsafe, and that failed me as well.



So determined to find out if this was a driver hardware problem, I booted into Windows just now, and the connection is fine.



I have no idea what to do now. If anybody wants to see results from Terminal, there may be a delay (due to me having to boot from Windows to Ubuntu). I really need help with this. I've only been using Ubuntu for 3 months, but I don't want to go back to Windows!

Hi all. My disclaimer:I am the Sgt. Schultz of Ubuntu I know nothing! I just installed ubuntu 8.4.1, and started to config my internet. Ubuntu detected my Realtek RTL8139/810x NIC driver Following the users guide I discovered I have no ndiswrapper or ndisgtk. I went on line and got them, but don't know how to get them to ubuntu in the right file format. Once I get them there I can carry on until the next roadblock. Part of my problems will concern running command lines, so if there is a tut for that it sure would help. I prefer to do as much as I can in the terminal. Best way to learn is by doing. I plan to be answering questions instead of asking them asap. All help will be appreciated (even helpful flames..lol)
